Privacy Policy

What we collect, why we collect it, and the choices you have.

Last updated: October 3, 2026

This page explains how Study of Music (“we”, “us”) handles your information. It has three parts:

  1. Part 1 covers our website, studyofmusic.com.
  2. Part 2 covers the Study of Music app for iPhone and iPad.
  3. Part 3 covers Study of Music Trivia, our upcoming iOS game.

We’ve tried to write it in plain English. If anything is unclear, see Contact us at the bottom of this page.

Part 1

The Study of Music website

What we collect

  • Account details — your email address and password. Your password is stored only as a one-way hash, never in plain text.
  • Your practice — the drills, lessons and courses you complete, the practice you log, and the XP and progress that come from it.
  • Things you choose to save — recordings and files you upload, drawings and markings, and notes your teacher writes for you.
  • Account links — if your account is connected to a teacher’s studio or to a parent or guardian, that link.

Cookies and your browser

We use a small number of cookies that the site needs to work, such as the one that keeps you signed in. Your browser also stores a few settings on your device. The website does not use advertising cookies or third-party analytics.

Some pages show videos hosted on YouTube and use fonts from Google Fonts. When those load, your browser connects to Google, which receives basic technical details such as your IP address under Google’s own privacy policy.

Who can see your information

  • You.
  • Your teacher, while you’re in their studio, so they can plan and follow your practice.
  • Your parent or guardian, if their account is linked to yours.
  • The community leaderboard shows XP and instrument next to a random nickname — never your name or email.

We do not sell your personal information. We email you only about your account, such as password resets. To see, correct or delete your website account information, contact us.

Part 2

Study of Music for iPhone and iPad

The Study of Music app for iPhone and iPad is a companion to the website and uses the same account.

What we collect

We collect only what the practice features need:

  • Account details — your email address, a display name, and your password (stored on our servers only as a one-way hash, never in plain text).
  • Practice activity — each drill you complete: when, for how long, the difficulty, any comfort rating or note you add, and (for Scale Check) a short summary such as “3 runs · 0 slips · 88% even”.
  • Recordings you choose to save — audio notes and repertoire takes you record or upload.
  • Drawings and markings — sketches from the drawing board and Apple Pencil markings you make on worksheets and sheet music.
  • Things your teacher writes — lesson notes, comments on your recordings, your practice plan, lessons and recitals.
  • Family links — if a parent or guardian account is linked to yours, that link.

The microphone

The app uses the microphone in two ways, and only after you allow it:

  • Listening while you play (Scale Check, sight-reading, note games). The sound is analysed on your device to work out which notes you played. This audio is never recorded, stored, or sent anywhere — only the result (for example, how many notes were right) is saved with your practice.
  • Recording, when you press record to save an audio note or a take of a piece. Those recordings are uploaded to your account so you and your teacher can listen to them.

What we don’t collect

  • No third-party analytics, advertising or tracking SDKs, and no advertising identifier.
  • No location, contacts, photos, or health data.
  • No push notifications. The optional “Remind me to practise” reminder is scheduled by your own device and is off unless you turn it on.

Who can see your information

  • You.
  • Your teacher, while you are in their studio (and your past teacher can still read the history from when they taught you). They see your practice, recordings, markings and plan so they can teach you.
  • Your parent or guardian, if their account is linked to yours. They can see your practice and your teacher’s notes, and can log practice for you.
  • We do not sell, rent or share your personal data with anyone else.

On your device

  • Your sign-in is kept in an HTTPS session cookie and, so that home-screen widgets can show your week and log practice, a copy of that session token is kept in the device keychain.
  • On a shared family iPad, a parent can let each child practise under their own name. The children’s and the parent’s sessions are kept in the device keychain; switching back to the parent needs Face ID, Touch ID or the device passcode.
  • Practice logged without a connection is kept on the device until it can be uploaded.
  • The “Add lessons to my Calendar” option gives your calendar app a private link to your lesson times. Anyone with that link can see those times, so don’t share it.

Your choices

  • Turn off microphone access at any time in Settings → Study of Music. Scale Check then lets you tick off each run yourself.
  • Sign out from You → Sign out.
  • Delete your account from You → Delete account. This permanently removes your account, practice history, recordings, markings and profile. Records that belong to someone else but mention you (for example, a note a parent logged for their child) are kept with your name removed.

Children

Many of our users are children learning with a teacher. Children’s accounts are normally created by their teacher or linked to a parent, who can see the child’s activity. We do not use children’s information for advertising or anything other than their music lessons. A parent who wants their child’s account deleted can do so from the app or by contacting us.

Part 3

Study of Music Trivia (iOS game)

This game hasn’t launched yet. This part describes how Study of Music Trivia is being designed to handle information. We’ll review it and update this page before the game is released.

Information we collect

  • Your sign-in — your Game Center player ID and display name, or, if you use Sign in with Apple, the identifier Apple gives us. With Sign in with Apple, the email address we receive can be a private relay address from Apple instead of your real one. For players under 13 we don’t store or show the Game Center display name; they pick a name from a preset list instead.
  • Gameplay — your matches, answers and scores, and the songs you build in the game.
  • Practice progress — your review deck, streaks, and how well you know each category.
  • Notification settings — which notifications you’ve turned on, and your device’s push token (a code Apple provides so we can deliver those notifications).
  • Crash reports — if you’ve chosen to share analytics with app developers in your iPhone’s settings, Apple sends us anonymous crash reports that help us fix bugs.

Information we don’t collect

  • Your precise location.
  • Your contacts. You play friends through Game Center or from your recent opponents; we never upload your address book.
  • Microphone or camera recordings.
  • Your photos.
  • Chat messages. There is no free-text chat — players can only send preset reactions, such as “Nice save”. Reports about a player or a question use preset reasons, too.

How we use it

  • To run matches and keep track of whose turn it is.
  • To send the notifications you’ve turned on — “it’s your turn”, reminders and practice reminders. We respect quiet hours.
  • To save your progress.
  • To fix bugs and improve the game.

Who we share it with

We never sell your personal information.

We share information only with service providers that help us run the game:

  • Apple, for Game Center and push notifications.
  • [HOSTING PROVIDER], which hosts the game’s servers and stores its data.
  • [ANALYTICS PROVIDER], which helps us see how the game is working so we can improve it.

Other players see only your display name, the initial shown on your avatar, your progress in a match you’re playing together, and the preset reactions you send.

Advertising

[ADVERTISING: TO BE DECIDED BEFORE LAUNCH]

Whatever we decide, players under 13 will never be shown behavioral or targeted advertising — that is, ads picked based on what they do in the game or elsewhere.

Children under 13

This section explains how we handle information from children under 13, in line with the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The first time the game opens, there’s a quick age check. For players under 13:

  • We collect only what’s needed to run the game.
  • Display names come from a preset list — no real names.
  • There are no public profiles.
  • Friends and invites stay off until a parent gives verifiable consent.

Parents: you can review your child’s information, ask us to delete it, or withdraw your consent at any time — in the game’s Parent area (behind a grown-up check) or by contacting us (see Contact us below).

Schools and classrooms

A teacher or school may give consent on parents’ behalf, but only for classroom use. When they do, student information is used only for that educational purpose and never for advertising. School records are handled consistent with FERPA, the U.S. Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.

Keeping and deleting your data

  • You can delete your account in the game, or by emailing us.
  • Once you ask, your account data is deleted within [30] days.
  • Accounts of players under 13 are deleted after [12 months] without any activity.

Your rights

You can ask to see the information we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or get a copy of it. Residents of California (under the CCPA/CPRA) and of the EU and UK (under the GDPR) can exercise these rights by contacting us. We may need to confirm it’s really you, or that you’re the child’s parent, before we act on a request.

Keeping it safe

Your information is encrypted while it travels between your device and our servers, and only people who need it to run the game can access it.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we’ll update this page and the date at the top. If a change is important, we’ll also tell people in the apps. If we make a material change to how we collect, use or share children’s information, we’ll ask parents for their consent again first.
